Bollywood 2017 Music Round-Up

Every year among the onslaught of movies releases, we are presented with album after album which often go unappreciated. Too often the fate of the movie tends to leave its soundtrack forgotten as words like ‘hit’ or ‘flop’ take precedence over all else.

And yet it is that very much which often stays with us far longer than the movie it comes packaged in. It may be the singer, the music director, how its picturized or its meaning in the context of the movie, but songs have a way of weedling their way into our heads and refusing to budge.

While 2017 was, like any other year of late, bursting with remixes and party songs aplenty, it still offered many unforgettable gems. Albums like Jab Harry Met Sejal, Meri Pyaari Bindu, Phillauri, Jagga Jasoos and Rangoon stole the year and gave us tunes to be washed over by and feel and had us believe that there is still art to be found amidst all the commerce.

So for those curious to know which songs were worth a listen from the year gone by, in no particular order, here’s our list of tracks which stole the year:

Enna Sonna’ from ‘OK Jaanu’

The pressure’s always on when remaking a widely appreciated movie, and Shaad Ali attempted to do just that and re-create the magic of “O Kaadhal Kanmani”. While his Hindi remake fell flat, the music lingers on and proved to be one of the film’s saving graces. While the remixed ‘The Humma Song’ went viral and broke records, it was with “Enna Sonna” that I was most taken. AR Rahman’s absolute gem of a melody, beautifully rendered by Arijit Singh and the moving lyrics by Gulzar makes this a winner.

Phir Bhi Tum Ko Chahunga’ from ‘Half Girlfriend’

There is an unexplained sense of magic at play when director Mohit Suri teams up with Arijit Singh as they have proved time and again. Suri is clearly a directed who understands melody and music (far more than movie making I might add) and while Half Girlfriend was entirely forgettable it’s soundtrack certainly wasn’t.

In times where you get remixes and one melody here and there, it was refreshing to see a distinctly original album, rife with feeling. But it is ‘Phir Bhi Tum Ko Chahunga’ which takes the cake, bursting with emotion and beautiful lyrics which in many ways made it feel like the spiritual sequel of ‘Tum Hi Ho’.

Galti Se Mistake’ from ‘Jagga Jasoos’

To single out one song from this once in a lifetime musical opus from Pritam would be tough. This film is a career-best for so many involved spearheaded by simply one of the best director-composer duos we have in Pritam and Anurag Basu.

These are all songs for the ages moulded so beautifully into the narrative, but none so much as  ‘Galti Se Mistake’ which was without a doubt the earworm of 2017. Add in some truly fine choreography and unforgettable picturisation with Ranbir Kapoor at his expressive best.

Hawayein’ from ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’

There were few songs this year as deeply touching or personal than Hawayein with Pritam once again firing on all cylinders. While the film was talked about for all the wrong reasons, it’s winning soundtrack thankfully got its due. After unforgettable albums like Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal the Pritam-Imtiaz combination was back and certainly didn’t disappoint, offering chartbusters like ‘Radha’, ‘Safar’ and ‘Butterfly’. But the one song which has constant repetitive appeal is ‘Hawayein’, a rare track that made you feel like you were getting something new from it every time.

In closing, special mention of the following which were equally impressive:

  1. Ik Vaari Aa’ and ‘Darasal’ from ‘Raabta
  2. Radio’ and ‘Main Agar’ from ‘Tubelight
  3. Main Kaun Hoon’ from ‘Secret Superstar’
  4. Kaabil Hoon’ from ‘Kaabil
  5. Laila Mein Laila’ from ‘Raees’.
  6. Dil Diya Gallan’ and ‘Swag Se Swagat’ from ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’
  7. Roke Na Ruke’ from ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’
  8. Baarish’ from ‘Half GirlFriend’.

Here’s looking forward to what the year ahead has in store!
